winter washing tips

Getting your automobile ready for winter is always one of the last minute items on most car owner's agenda. Having your tires, wiper blades, heating, and lighting systems checked is essential for keeping your auto running correctly throughout the cold winter months. What about the outside finish and interior of your vehicle? Winter's elements such as snow, ice, snad, and salt can shorten the life of your vehicles finish quickly if it's not properly prepared and maintained.

The following steps may help you:

  • After removing pine pitch (with rubbing alcohol), road tar, and insect droppings, wash and dry the vehicle thoroughly.
  • Touch up any stone chip dings in the paint, especially along the front hood. Larger areas should be done by a professional auto body shop.
  • Rinse and inspect wheelwells; spray a rubberized undercoating on areas that need attention.
  • Inspect your mud flaps. If you do not have any, purchase some. It is the least expensive item that will protect your vehicle's rocker panel area.
  • Putting a coat of wax on your vehicle is also very important. There is no such thing as a "no wax" finish. All clear coat finishes need protection too. If your car has lost its luster or has fine scratches on the paint, you may want to have the vehicle mirror-glazed and then waxed.
  • Treat your vinyl top, all rubber bumpers, and tires with a cleaner/conditioner. Preferably one that has UV protection properties.
  • Vacuum the interior of the car or have it shampooed at a professional detail shop (like us) or a dealership.
  • Inspect and clean, or replace, your floor mats. They are inexpensive and will protect your car's carpet from mud, slush, and salt being brought into your vehicle.
  • Makes sure all of your windows are clean.
  • During the winter, wash and vacuum your vehicle regularly. After washing it, you should:

  • Wipe down door jambs and door weather-stripping.
  • Run heat on high for 15 minutes while you roll your electric windows up and down a few times.
  • Turn your key in your vehicles door locks and trunk to help displace any water.
  • Spending an afternoon preparing your vehicle will be worth your time and effort. Most all items needed may be purchased at an auto parts or department store. If there is a problem, contact your dealership or a professional auto detail shop.(like us)
